Licoricia of Winchester

I was approached by the Licoricia of Winchester Appeal to design and typeset a book by Rebecca Abrams. The book tells the extraordinary story of Licoricia of Winchester, a hugely successful Jewish businesswoman from the 13th century. The Appeal commissioned the sculptor Ian Rank Broadley FRSS to create a statue of Licoricia, which now stands in Winchester city centre. The book accompanies the statue, helping readers to understand more about Licoricia and what life was like for Jews in medieval England. I also designed the ebook edition. Picture research was provided by Emily Hedges.

On the cover, I was asked to use the typeface Albertus. This typeface was designed by Berthold Wolpe. Wolpe was born into a Jewish family in Germany in 1905. His family emigrated to England after the Nazis came to power in 1935. The Albertus typeface is also used for the inscription at the base of the statue – Love Thy Neighbour As Thyself. For the interior pages, I chose the typeface Maiola designed by Veronika Burian.

So You Want To Be A Brain Surgeon?

This book is aimed at people considering a career in medicine. It provides readers with guidance on the types of roles available within the medical profession – so not just the path to becoming a brain surgeon – and the lifestyle, progression, and training associated with each.

I researched images for the section openers from Oxford’s digital asset management system in order to bring colour and interest to the pages without adding to the budget. I aimed to bring out the features like “A Day in the Life…” so that readers could easily dip into the book and find interesting facts or perspectives to help them discover more about careers in medicine. I provided a text design specification for the book which was then typeset by an external supplier.

Andrew Blick’s UK Politics is a higher education textbook that gives readers a detailed introduction to the political system in the UK. The writing and structure aims to be accessible and supportive, guiding the reader to engage with primary sources and key debates on contemporary issues. I therefore sought to make the design feel open and friendly. The colour palette is bright, challenging the idea that politics might be dull or boring. Full page photographs help to break up the book into clear sections, and each of the features is clearly differentiated from the main text with its own colour palette and style.

Classic Library templates

The Classic Library is a small set of interior design templates geared towards academic content. The Library is available in three different trim sizes and offers two different copyfits in order to match desired extents. To avoid the need for modifications on individual titles, I have designed the Library to include a large range of structural elements. I developed the typographic detailing in consultation with typesetting suppliers in order to take full advantage of autopagination tools. This means that books typeset in these templates can be produced quickly and efficiently. Since its implementation in 2019, the Classic Library has been used to typeset hundreds of Oxford University Press monographs.
